The Gold-Diggers, Inc.

The Gold-Diggers, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, founded as a women's club in 1976. Since 1977, The Gold-Diggers produced and performed annual, Broadway-style musical revues, and donated the proceeds of these performances to their organization's charities. Over one million dollars, earmarked for research and local patient aid, was donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Southern Florida and Puerto Rico Chapter. Secondary charities have included the Blood Bank of Miami Children's Hospital and the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center, in the 1980s. For approximately the last 20 years, the organization has also benefitted The Food For Life Network, which delivers nutritious meals to individuals in Miami-Dade County who have been afflicted with or affected by HIV and/or Aids. Total donations from 1976 - 2013 are almost two million dollars.

The Gold-Diggers, with the support of their fantastic brother group, The Gold-Brickers, produced top-quality musical revues at the Olympia Theatre at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts from 1977 to 2011, including a show ("It Happened at Gusman" - 1996) to raise public awareness of the historical and artistic importance of this beautiful theatrical treasure. The Gold-Diggers' shows had the largest casts to perform at Gusman, with two-hour performances and casts of as many as 85 members in the 1980s to 50 people in more recent years. Unfortunately, due to economic reasons, it became financially unfeasible for performances to continue at Gusman. The Club performed in 2012 and 2013 at Pinecrest Gardens.

To raise funds to underwrite annual production costs, each member spent untold volunteer hours every year doing everything from putting on black tie fundraisers, casino nights, and costumed galas, to garage sales, raffles, and "cut-a-thons". Cast members designed and built scenery, made costumes, accessories, and props, solicited donations, program ads, and sold tens of thousands of tickets to their performances - not to mention studying lyrics and choreography during seven straight weeks of rehearsals each year. Despite the awesome imagination and commitment that these activities required, Gold-Diggers and Gold-Brickers worked wholeheartedly and with incredible friendship and devotion to each other. Lifelong, multi-generational friendships continue.

Sadly, economic obstacles and the tremendous demands required to produce top-quality shows have become problematic for the group. Its members have decided that the time has come to take a final, gracious bow and close the curtain on 37 years of fabulous entertainment and charitable works. The Gold-Diggers' years of achievements were celebrated at a Grand Finale Celebration held at their beloved "Gusman" on Saturday, June 14, 2014, with former Gold-Diggers and Brickers returning from around the country to participate in the event. The Gold-Diggers made final donations to their charities during a presentation at 8 p.m., at which time, the City of Miami acknowledged the tremendous artistic, civic, and philanthropic contributions made by The Gold-Diggers ...... "What We Did for Love".
